Promote, Serve, and Protect Public Interest
“Notaries are public officers of the State of North Carolina charged with protecting the public from fraud and forgery. The primary tools notaries use are requiring personal appearance, positively identifying signers and recording evidence of the notarization in a journal of notary acts.”

FAQ
What can I expect during my notary appointment?
Arrive at your appointment time. Do not arrive early, as I may be with another client. I reserve the right to reschedule if you are more than 15 minutes late, as I may have other clients booked after you.
Before we get started, I’ll check to see that your document has a notary certificate and that you have an approved ID. I’ll record your document type, ID type, and signature in my notary journal. You will sign the document, take the oath, or complete the service you came for. Then we will do the same for witnesses. I’ll complete the notary certificate and add my stamp. You will then pay for the notary services.
Most appointments take about 15 minutes. You must bring your own witnesses to the appointment if needed.
What are approved identification cards?
Government-issued photo ID with signature must be current, not expired/temporary/copy. Credit cards, store cards, and school cards are unacceptable. ID name must match the name on the document.
Can I sign my document ahead of time?
No, documents need to be signed in front of the notary, in person, with proper identification.
Do you offer mobile notary services?
If prearranged, I may offer some mobile notary services where I meet the client at a location such as a nursing home, hospital, or other agreed-upon site. Round-trip travel fees of 70 cents per mile apply in addition to notary fees, and the client must pay at the appointment time. You will receive the estimated mileage fees ahead of the appointment.
What payment options do you accept?
We accept cash, checks, and credit cards. Payment is due at your appointment. We do not accept bills larger than $20.
What do notaries do in North Carolina?
Notaries in North Carolina notarize signatures on documents, administer oaths, notarize absentee ballots, itemize contents of abandoned bank security boxes, and swear public officials into office.

What do notaries NOT do in North Carolina?
Every state has different rules. In North Carolina, notaries do not officiate weddings, certify true copies, notarize photographs, notarize their own signature, notarize any document that the notary might benefit from, give legal advice, tell you what notary certificate to use, or notarize documents if the notary is not physically in North Carolina or the signers are not present.
Notaries have the right to refuse to notarize documents that appear to be tampered with, are fraudulent, or may be used in illegal activities.
Where can I get a notary certificate for my document?
If your document does not have a notary certificate that the notary completes and signs, you can ask the document creator to attach one. You can also get one here. https://www.sosnc.gov/divisions/notary/resources
Notaries cannot advise you which notary certificate to use or offer any legal advice.
What if I need an apostille certificate on my notarized document?
Notaries in NC do not provide apostille services. The Secretary of State of North Carolina issues the Apostille Certificate.
