What is your weekly plan for at home preschool?

The internet is overflowing with amazing ideas for doing simple “school” at home preschool, but it can be overwhelming to sift through it all. If you’re looking for a starting point that’s simple, meaningful, and flexible, here’s a weekly plan you can begin today, plus a free printable planning sheet to help you organize your ideas.

Real-Life Learning: My Approach

With a degree in education, many people assumed I’d have my kids memorizing flashcards and reading novels before kindergarten. But instead of formal lessons, I leaned into play. I naturally wove in numbers, letters, and Bible verses into our daily routines while building a joyful foundation for lifelong learning and critical thinking.

Letting learning unfold through play is a beautiful thing, but a little structure can go a long way. Just like you’d stock a homework corner with sharpened pencils and paper, having a few simple resources on hand helps parents, grandparents, and caregivers build learning moments into everyday life. The goal is to create plans that were simple, flexible, and joyful.

Weekly Themes to Guide Your Week

A great way to begin is by focusing on a Letter of the Week, then pairing it with a Number and a Bible Verse. You can also layer in a general theme such as animals, seasons, or foods. There are as many ABC flashcard themes out there as there are fancy coffee drinks! (Yes, coffee-themed ABC cards exist—but they may be a bit too energized for toddlers!)

Sample Weekly Structure

Here’s an easy structure to follow for your first week:

Letter: A

  • Practice the sound of the letter A.
  • Go on a scavenger hunt around the house to find things that start with A.
  • Trace, paint, or shape the letter using playdough or sand.

Number: 1

  • Count objects, snacks, toys, or steps.
  • Trace or paint the number 1.
  • Match movement with numbers: “Clap once,” “Jump once,” etc.

Bible Verse:

“When I am afraid, I will trust in you.” – Psalm 56:3

  • Recite it together each day.
  • Create a simple craft or coloring page to go along with the verse.

Weekly Educational Activities

Preschool learning should be hands-on and playful. Here are some simple, repeatable ideas to fill your week. No fancy supplies? No problem, just improvise! Tracing letters in yogurt works just as well as a salt tray.

Picture books are a great way to have natural conversations about all sorts of things. If you find a busy week or that you got off track with your weekly plan, grab a picture book and jump back in. If you live in a place without books in your native language, YouTube or ebooks can be used.

  • Sensory Play: Water play with foam letters, letter-shaped pasta, or a rice bin
  • Arts & Crafts: Apple stamping for “A”, finger painting the number
  • Fine Motor Practice: Use tweezers to pick up small items, trace in salt or sand
  • Read-Alouds: Find books that connect to the weekly letter or theme
  • Songs & Rhymes: Alphabet songs, number songs, Bible verse memory songs

If your week gets busy or off track, don’t stress. Grab a picture book, snuggle up, and jump back in.

Enrichment Ideas

For older preschoolers or when you want to go deeper, consider adding:

  • Field Trips: Visit an apple orchard, pet store, or farmer’s market
  • Cooking Together: Try simple recipes based on the weekly theme
  • Acts of Kindness: Make cards for neighbors or donate to a local food drive

These don’t have to happen weekly. Once a month is great!

Tips for at home Preschool Success

  • Keep it short: 15–30 minutes of focused time is more than enough.
  • Use a printable plan sheet: having it out on the counter makes it easier to remember to do it!
  • Be flexible: It’s okay to adjust or skip. Follow your child’s interests.
  • Make it fun: Learning through play is real learning.
  • Celebrate progress: Cheer for effort, not perfection—yours and your child’s!
  • Use a printable plan sheet: having it out on the counter makes it easier to remember to do it!

Final Thoughts: Start Simple and Grow

You don’t need to do it all. Try one or two ideas each week and tweak as you go. Go to the library together. Read books, play together, and enjoy the gift of learning at home. These simple, joyful routines can lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
