Product Review: CLEP Exams
What are some ways you can save money on college? Testing out of required college courses is one way to save money on college and earn credit toward a college degree. AP (Advanced Placement) exams are sometimes offered to high school students upon completion of an advanced level high school course and award college credits for passing. However, CLEP exams (College Level Examination Program) are available to just about everyone anytime with 34 tests in 5 subject areas. These 1- 2 hour computer based multiple choice exams cost approximately $90 per test and can award 3-6 college credits. There are even testing sites in countries other than the US. Anyone who excels at a particular topic and is planning to go to college should consider taking a CLEP exam as many colleges and universities accept passing scores as college credit. College Board, creator of the SAT test, offers AP and CLEP exams and a wide variety of test and college prep materials. By taking AP and/or CLEP exams, students may be able to save significant time and money on college or free up their schedule to take other courses. With some careful planning and research, some students have even shaved…
Product Review: Manual Pencil Sharpener
What’s your favorite non electric office product? I have a serious love of office products. Zebra striped paperclips and pastel sticky notes make me swoon. I wrap my trademark blue tape around my brand-new Sharpies so nobody walks off with them. I wasn’t brand-specific until I discovered Dixon Ticonderoga pencils. However, for years, pencil sharpeners frustrated me. I kept bent paperclips and screwdrivers in my desk drawer to unclog them after kids sharpened colored pencils or cheap pencils down to the nubs or inserted the wrong end of the pencil in the sharpener. Grrr. Manual. Electric. New. Used. Handheld when we broke the remaining one in the supply closet. Grrr. Pencil sharpeners. Then one day I got a gift. My best friend said her husband bought a box of pencil sharpeners and wanted to give me one. She didn’t seem overly excited about this as she handed it to me. Considering mine were always breaking, I was happy to get a new pencil sharpener. Life suddenly went from good to great. I had a new office product love! Where had this gem been all my life?! I found myself teaching kids and adults how to use my Groovy Green pencil…
Ministry Review: Moms In Prayer International
Is praying for an hour straight hard or easy for you? “Moms in Prayer International impacts children and schools worldwide for Christ by gathering mothers to pray.” This tagline says it all and it’s probably one of the best parenting decisions I ever made. For many years, I joined like minded moms in praying for our children, their schools, and their teachers. What started as two moms praying together in 1984 has now grown to groups in over 150 countries with the vision that eventually every school in the world would be covered by a group of praying moms. The premise is to pray for your kids and their schools for an hour each week. I really liked the format they provide weekly, which is an outline for your prayer time and starts with highlighting an attribute of God. Since the groups are organized by schools, it’s not likely that everyone is from the same church which I found to be a strength. The best part of my week was the hour spent praying with sisters in Christ, passionate about our kids, schools and teachers. When I went back to work as a teacher, I also really appreciated knowing that…
Cold Brew Coffee Review
Did you know that cold brew coffee has been around for many, many years, and it’s not just a current craze? My parents and grandparents made cold brew coffee all of my life. Our fridge always housed bottles of liquid gold, cold brewed coffee concentrate. We never had to worry about shelf life because we went through it quickly. Hot black coffee was the natural way to start and end the day and to offer to guests. Once some friends even let themselves in our house just before we returned home from a trip and hid my mom’s cold brew and ate up the ice cream in the freezer. The ice cream was forgivable, but we couldn’t imagine a more horrible prank than to hide the coffee! While I had to use mini 4 cup coffee pots thru college, I soon got my own Toddy Cold Brew system. Cold brew regular and decaf liquid concentrate are always in my fridge. While we dabble with French press and pour overs at our house, we always have cold brew on hand for hot or iced coffee. My favorite benefit is the lower acidity of the cold brewed coffee than the traditional hot…
How to make kombucha at home with 3 ingredients
How do you feel about the rising prices of kombucha? Get a scoby, some tea, and some sugar, and for a fraction of the cost you can make kombucha at home with 3 ingredients. Kombucha and other fermented foods continue to rise in popularity although they have been around forever. The prices are also on the rise which is what made me look into making kombucha at home and how I discovered the ultimate resource. Learn how to make kombucha at home In my quest to learn how to make kombucha at home, I came across The Big Book of Kombucha: Brewing, Flavoring, and Enjoying the Health Benefits of Fermented Tea by Hannah Crum and Alex LeGory at my local library. Of all the resources I found, this one has been my favorite and the most helpful. Each one of my questions, from recipes to fermentation time, has been answered by the Kombucha Mama. It truly is the “one go-to resource for all things kombucha.” Learn to troubleshoot and branch out From brewing techniques to flavor combinations to troubleshooting, to how to travel internationally with your scoby (helpful for my future plans for international scoby hotels startups), to highlights of…
Hard is not the same thing as bad
What moments of parenting feel overwhelming to you? Book Review: Hard Is Not the Same Thing as Bad If I were to sit down to a coffee chat with new friends, I’d include Abbie Halberstadt on the invite list. While I do not actually know Abbie, her humor, advice, and encouragement would make us easy friends who could laugh and cry together before we even finished my first cup of coffee and her hot chocolate. Reading her book Hard is not the Same Thing as Bad felt like sitting in on a weekly book club with Abbie. #hintstab I have been following Abbie Halberstadt, author of M is for Mama, for a while and looking forward to her latest book Hard is Not the Same Thing as Bad. She posts on social media about the miraculous and messy world of motherhood. She and her husband have 10 children (including 2 sets of twins with identical birthdays) and their story can be found on her parenting podcast and blog https://misformama.net/. Abbie’s down-to-earth honesty is refreshing as she shares her parenting experiences through the lens of hard is not the same thing as bad and her hope in Jesus Christ. So many…
Put On Put Off Chart
What area of disobedience do you find yourself nagging a child about? Have you seen a put on put off obedience chart? It’s common to tell children to “stop doing that” but less common to take the time to tell them what to do instead or to probe into the heart issue behind the problem. Even with our own faults, it’s common to focus on the fault not on the flip side of what we could do to change it. When my kids were little, I happened upon an obedience chart that gave suggestions for replacing bad actions with good ones. It gave Biblical principles and verses of what to “put off” and what to “put on” in an easy to read chart. I used this idea over a few years, making similar lists according to the top few problem areas for my kids. This obedience chart is still available on the internet as Wise Words for Moms. It also gave heart probing questions to ask, which are useful in the moment of discipline or as table talk conversations in general. Many types of “if-then” consequence lists are available, but this one is great for the younger years and will…
Overcoming Learning Challenges: 4 Strategies for Parents and Tutors
Is it better to avoid distractions or learn to deal with them? Not seeing joy in your child’s education because of learning challenges, grumpy attitudes, and lack of confidence? Here are 4 strategies for parents and tutors to help children with overcoming learning challenges. Much of the application of these strategies comes from talking over the changes, context, and benefits of the strategies instead of just giving a list of rules. For the younger years, parents should take the lead in setting up expectations for learning. For the middle years, parents and students should talk about options and expectations. For the launching years, students should take the lead if they have shown the maturity and self-discipline to complete tasks. If not, parents and students should discuss expectations and problem-solve learning challenges together. Establish study routines Whether your child does homework right away or not until after dinner, establish study routines. Talk about options for locations. Is the kitchen table a good fit or too distracting? Is the bedroom desk a good fit or too removed for accountability? Talk about establishing time routines to work on homework, do daily reading, organize papers, and study over notes taken in class. Talk about…
